The Halal Cosmetics Market Is Booming

September 15, 2025

In recent years, Southeast Asia has gradually become a hot market for global cosmetics. International beauty giants have increased their investments, viewing Southeast Asia as the next potential market after China.

However, when expanding into the Southeast Asian market, the vast Muslim population cannot be ignored. What is the current state of the halal cosmetics market? What key points should beauty companies consider when entering the halal market? How is China's halal cosmetics trade developing?

China's Halal Cosmetics Trade is Thriving

According to data from China's General Administration of Customs, China's cosmetics export value in the first quarter of 2024 exceeded 7.595 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 23.38%. Among this, exports to ASEAN (currently including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Myanmar, and Vietnam) accounted for approximately 836 million yuan, representing over 11% of the total.

A report titled *RCEP Cosmetic Market Research Report (ASEAN Chapter)* released by the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Medicines and Health Products shows that the trade value of cosmetics between China and ASEAN in 2022 was $1.23 billion. Of this, China's exports to ASEAN amounted to $920 million, accounting for about 16.1% of China's total cosmetics exports.

Halal Certification – The Key to Entering Southeast Asia

It is important to note that while the halal cosmetics market is booming, Muslim-majority countries like Indonesia have made halal certification a mandatory requirement for cosmetics imports. Halal certification, issued by religious authorities or related organizations, ensures that products comply with Islamic principles, allowing Muslim consumers to use them with confidence. In short, halal certification is a passport for products entering the Muslim consumer market.

8 Essential Halal Cosmetic Ingredients

In the beauty world, the rise of halal cosmetics has changed the game for many. Whether driven by religious beliefs, ethical considerations, or the pursuit of cleaner and more transparent products, consumers are increasingly focusing on the actual ingredients in beauty products. Today, let’s dive into the 8 essential halal cosmetic ingredients every beauty enthusiast should know.

Yunmei Cosmetics has 21 years of OEM/ODM experience, we can customize sunscreen, skin care set, face cream, hair removal cream, cosmetics, etc., with mature equipment and professional team, then we are familiar with the eight basic halal cosmetics ingredients:

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is a staple in many skincare products, known for its soothing and healing properties. This powerful plant is not only permissible under halal guidelines but also highly beneficial for the skin. It helps relieve irritation, reduce redness, and provide hydration. Whether in lotions, creams, or serums, aloe vera can help maintain healthy and vibrant skin without compromising your halal standards.

Argan Oil

Often referred to as "liquid gold," argan oil is extracted from the kernels of the argan tree. This oil is a halal cosmetic ingredient with extensive benefits for both skin and hair. Rich in vitamin E and fatty acids, it deeply moisturizes, promotes a smooth complexion, and enhances skin elasticity. Argan oil is also excellent for hair, adding shine and reducing frizz.

Glycerin

Glycerin is a humectant, meaning it helps retain moisture in the skin. In halal cosmetics, plant-based glycerin (derived from plants) is used instead of glycerin from animal sources, which may not be permissible. This ingredient is essential in many skincare products, from creams to lotions, providing deep hydration and helping to keep the skin soft.

Saffron

Saffron is a luxurious and exotic ingredient that has been used in beauty rituals for centuries. This spice is not only allowed in halal cosmetics but also praised for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It can help brighten the skin, reduce pigmentation, and add a radiant glow. Incorporating saffron into your beauty regimen ensures you benefit from an ingredient as effective as it is halal.

Green Tea

Packed with antioxidants, green tea is another wonderful halal-friendly ingredient that benefits the skin in multiple ways. It helps reduce inflammation, combat signs of aging, and even protect the skin from environmental damage. Green tea extract is commonly found in toners, masks, and creams, contributing to the overall health and appearance of the skin.  Shea Butter

Derived from the nuts of the shea tree, shea butter is a powerful moisturizer and an approved ingredient in halal cosmetics. It is particularly beneficial for those with dry skin types. Rich in vitamins A and E, shea butter helps protect the skin's natural oils. You’ll find this ingredient in various lotions, conditioners, and lip balms, making it a versatile addition to your beauty shelf.

Honey

Honey is a natural antibacterial and humectant, perfect for skincare and haircare. In halal cosmetics, it is essential to ensure that the honey is ethically sourced and complies with halal standards. Honey can help unclog pores while providing natural hydration and glow to the skin. It is also excellent for conditioning hair, giving it a silky, luxurious feel.

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil is a halal-approved ingredient that mimics the skin’s natural oils, making it an excellent moisturizer. It is suitable for all skin types, from oily to dry, and helps control acne and reduce signs of aging. Jojoba oil is found in a variety of skincare products, enhancing their moisturizing and healing properties.

Choosing halal cosmetics is not just about adhering to religious guidelines but also embracing ethical, clean, and transparent products. These cosmetics often avoid harsh chemicals and potential allergens, making them suitable for sensitive skin and Muslim consumers.
